Conservation through connection: Approaches to engaging communities in applied grizzly bear research

چکیده
Human-wildlife dynamics is a growing field and one of considerable importance to conservation. Wild spaces are in short supply, consequently wildlife people increasingly share the landscape, though not necessarily by choice. As result, peoples’ needs might be prioritized over those wildlife, even cases human-wildlife conflict. For conservation effective coexistence possible, both must simultaneously addressed. Rather than an afterthought or sentence conservation/management implications section paper, community engagement should addressed before, during, after research project. However, this can difficult often complicated task, for multiple reasons. Building relationships founded on trust, respect reciprocity with members takes commitment, time, skill, willingness researchers open-minded terms methodologies new ideas. Different cultural norms, beliefs, perspectives biases further exacerbate these challenges. Here, we three case studies reflecting our own experiences engaging communities grizzly bear ( Ursus arctos ) ecology science. We conclude guidelines advancing suggestions tackling some common barriers. Overall, offer considerations practical more holistic approach large carnivore conservation, established foundation strong support.

Management and Conservation Note Success of Grizzly Bear Population Augmentation in Northwest Montana
Augmentation of large carnivore populations can be a valuable management and recovery tool, but success of many programs has not been well documented. The Cabinet–Yaak grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) population was located in northwestern Montana and northern Idaho, USA, and was estimated at 30–40 individuals. The Cabinet Mountains portion of this area may be isolated from the remainder of the zone...

متن کاملA Review of Grizzly Bear Harvest Management in British Columbia
This review builds on the information presented in Hamilton and Austin (2002). The purposes are: 1) to identify and present information on the outstanding scientific and management issues involved in assuring that hunting does not represent a conservation threat to grizzly bear populations and, 2) to outline potential future directions that are under consideration for grizzly bear harvest manag...
متن کاملGrizzly Bear Density in Glacier National Park, Montana
We present the first rigorous estimate of grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) population density and distribution in and around Glacier National Park (GNP), Montana, USA. We used genetic analysis to identify individual bears from hair samples collected via 2 concurrent sampling methods: 1) systematically distributed, baited, barbed-wire hair traps and 2) unbaited bear rub trees found along trails. We u...
